Have you seen those little paper cards sitting next to the green cup stoppers at your local Starbucks? Don’t ignore them. Pick one up and flip it over — each card has a code for an iOS freebie on the back. Every Tuesday the ubiquitous coffee purveyor offers customers a free download or two. Frequently the codes offer a song from a popular artist such as Bruno Mars or Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, or an iOS app, an iBook, or an episode of a TV show to watch in iTunes.
This week’s offering is Fibble HD, a physics-based puzzler that normally retails for $0.99.
Players travel with Fibble, an adorable little alien, through four rooms: the kitchen, the bathroom, kid’s room, the basement, and the garden. Each room offers a variety of levels; there are 40 levels in the game. Solve all the levels so Fibble, with a little help from his friends, can finally exit the house and travel back to his home planet.
Fibble’s gameplay crosses Angry Birds with mini golf. Draw back Fibble with a finger, then release it to earn coins and other prizes. Complete the level by using one, two, or three three flicks. The fewer flicks you need, the more stars you earn, and like Angry Birds, Fibble HD encourages the replay of levels again to earn three stars on each.
As one might expect, the courses get increasingly complicated as the player moves through the game. At times the player also has to tap the screen to roll Fibble along. There are a few surprises along the way and Fibble meets friends with powers that help him navigate the course.
Fibble HD is a casual puzzler with colorful animation that will appeal to kids and as well as adults. It’s Game Center-enabled, and has all the usual social media bells and whistles.
At 524 MB, the app is rather large, so make sure you have at least 1GB free on your device before installing it.
The verdict: If you’re in Starbucks already, why not pick up a copy of Fibble HD? It could be the perfect addition to your afternoon coffee break.
