Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission has slapped Samsung with a fine for the astroturf smear campaigns it has waged against some of its rivals. On Thursday, the agency levied a $341,037 fine against Samsung’s Taiwanese subsidiary for hiring students to post fake online reviews criticizing HTC devices. A pittance, considering Samsung’s $4 billion marketing budget, but certainly a PR blow. The company said it’s reviewing the decision and will “take all necessary steps” to protect its reputation.
Responding to the call for smaller flagship-caliber smartphones, HTC is today introducing the One mini, a 4.3-inch version of its leading Android handset, the One. The physical design and onboard software remain unchanged, however HTC is aiming to price the One mini “two price points below the HTC One” and making a few downgrades en route to that goal. Among the tradeoffs you’ll have to make with the One mini is a step down to a 1.4GHz dual-core processor (Snapdragon 400), 1GB of RAM, 16GB of non-expandable storage, and the loss of NFC and optical image stabilization for the camera. The One’s IR blaster is also gone, however none of these alterations amount to a materially different user experience when the One mini is in your hands. HTC has cut corners, but done so intelligently enough to deliver “exactly the same experience” as on the company’s current Android flagship.

Every single company would do well to release a flagship device of their own – it is not only a matter of technological achievement, but one of pride as well. After all, what is the point of tooting your trumpet if you do not have a flagship that is capable of duking it out with the best of the rest out there? HTC knows that they have a winner with the HTC One on their hands in the recent past, where it has picked up mainly rave reviews from the masses as well as the press, but still, the HTC One was unable to help HTC deliver a stellar quarter when it comes to earnings. Having said that, this has not stopped HTC from moving in the right direction, and they have just announced the HTC One mini, keeping in vein with the “mini me” theme that smartphone manufacturers, Samsung especially, just love to play with these days.
The HTC One mini is said to be HTC’s ultimate 4.3″ smartphone, after all, it does come with HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound, all features that are available on their HTC One flagship, too. The HTC One mini would continue in the same iconic design flow of the HTC One, where you will find that the 4.3″ display is easy on the eyes, while a powerful dual-core 1.4 GHz processor helps run proceedings from underneath the hood. Not only that, it will also be powered by the most recent version of the Android operating system, where it will be accompanied by HTC Sense.
Coming in Glacial Silver and Stealth Black colors, the HTC One mini boasts of a striking aluminum unibody in a slim profile, looking premium regardless of which angle you’re starting it down from. Not only that, there is also HTC BoomSound, which is HTC’s dual frontal stereo speakers that deliver less distortion and finer detail, and headphone lovers will love the Beats Audio integration that delivers immersive audio to the next level. It remains to be seen just how much the HTC One mini will sell for, but it is tipped to arrive in select markets from August onwards, before a global rollout in September.

HTC is busy making yet another Android based phone for the future. Set to run Android 2.1 and powered by the snappy Snapdragon processor, this one goes by the name of the HTC Incredible!
Now, we’re not sure why HTC chose to shower this phone with such a pompous name. That too, when we see that some of the specs ain’t that great at all – especially when you compare it with the likes of the Nexus One or the HD2 – both made by HTC! Talking about specs, here’s what you will see the Incredible come with. Apart from the aforementioned Android 2.1, it will also integrate HTC’s SENSE UI. The RAM is an adequate 256MB – which is way lower than the Nexus One’s 512. The 5 megapixel camera at the rear gets dual LED flash. The screen looks like a WVGA one and should be 3.5 inches or more. Even if its 3.7-inches, it would be same in size as that of the Nexus One.
Design wise, the phone looks quite Okay and does not seem to sport any incredible design cues. Maybe HTC has something revolutionary under the Incredible’s belt ready to be showcased during the phone’s launch? That’s the best we can hope for.
