Aces of the Luftwaffe is a World War 2 shoot ’em up bullet hell style game. In this title, the air war over Europe is in full swing. You will play as the Allies, facing wave after wave of Axis planes equipped with guns and bombs.
The idea is to avoid enemy gunfire while shooting down as many planes as you can to survive. This is a game that has non-stop enemy action, so be prepared for some challenging battles.
Aces of the Luftwaffe is divided into different combat missions, each with several levels for you to complete.
As you destroy planes you will earn medals, which can be collected and used to unlock additional missions or to upgrade your plane. You can improve plane speed, power, and bullet speed, which makes levels easier to beat.
The game has pixellated graphics, which are not particularly impressive. The game just looks okay on the Retina iPad.
You control your plane with a finger on the screen, moving your finger to dodge bullets and fire on enemy planes. This is a one touch game, which means your plane fires back automatically, so movement is all you need to worry about.
Downed enemy planes occasionally drop power ups, which activate new weapons. You might get a spray of three bullets or something even more powerful, which helps when fighting off enemies. Since you don’t control the shooting, the main thing you will do is dodge enemy fire.
Though this starts off easily enough, it becomes a chore to maintain simply because levels are so long. Too long, in fact, which was my main complaint with the game. The levels are so long and unvaried that the game gets boring, which makes this just a mediocre shooter.
You will be able to choose pilots and planes later in the game, but these are all unlocked with medals. You don’t get enough medals in the game to regularly purchase everything you need, putting an emphasis on the game’s in-app purchases.
Finally, there are boss fights which provide some variation, but it isn’t enough to keep the gameplay from getting tedious, which means it’s probably best just for WW2 enthusiasts who love bullet hell games.
What I liked: The controls in this game work well. It’s easy to navigate with just a single finger on the screen.
What I didn’t like: As I mentioned, this game has a tendency to drag on. I’d also like to point out that it’s not quite as challenging or as fast-paced and furious as a traditional bullet hell game.
To buy or not to buy: Aces of the Luftwaffe is a passable shooter that might be suitable for war game lovers, but I’d take a good look at the reviews and the photos before making a decision.
