Moving trains, guns, zombies, and awesome undead bosses, can you ask for anything more in a game? I vote no, and that’s why Storm the Train is one entertaining app.
In this side-scrolling platform game, you will play as one of three agents who have been sent to fight an endless stream of zombies, robots, and ninjas.
Each of the characters is equipped with weapons to destroy enemies. You will change direction and run forward with the arrows on the screen, and jump by touching the up arrow.
Shooting is done with the button on the right side of the screen, and while these controls are functional, they are not optimal.
It was hard for me to play using these controls on the full sized iPad, and though it was easier to play on the smaller screen of the iPad mini, the controls were still awkward and difficult to use.
Aside from the controls, this is a fun game. You’ll progress forward continually on the moving train, shooting whatever attacks you. Enemies will fall at your feet, but it’s still tough because there are so many attackers.
Every so often you will run in to a boss. Fighting bosses will require you to be quick, dodging projectiles and firing your own weapon.
You will have a series of objectives to complete, which will earn you rewards in the form of coins.
The train is also littered with gold coins, which you pick up automatically as you go. The coins are used to purchase special power ups, which are useful when you fight bosses.
One power up, for example, is a pet gun that shoots continually until it is destroyed by damage. There are even jetpacks and vehicles to use, allowing you to annihilate entire hordes of enemies.
Coins are also used to purchase new outfits, weapons, gadgets, and upgrades, all of which make this game a lot of fun to play.
Your ultimate goal is to play to win, earning the highest score possible. This game doesn’t have achievements, but there are leaderboards so you can compete with your friends.
What I liked: I love the theme of this game, and I also was impressed with the high quality graphics.
What I didn’t like: The controls were hard to use on the full sized iPad, and I’d also like to point out that it takes a long time to progress in this game, earning enough coins to buy items. That’s to be expected with a freemium title, though.
To buy or not to buy: You can download this game for free, and it’s definitely worth spending a few minutes of time to check it out.
